We declare a climate and biodiversity emergency

We are clear there is a climate and biodiversity emergency that requires immediate and radical action by our business, our clients and our stakeholders.

Ecosphere+ works to empower businesses of all sizes to set and reach bold climate goals, championing natural climate solutions as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss.

As a carbon neutral company ourselves and a proud B Corp, we join over 800 businesses who have committed to being net zero by 2030 as part of the B Corp Climate Collective. Since 2017, Ecosphere+ has been a net zero business, calculating our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and offsetting our climate impact. We work continuously to understand our footprint, and how and where we can reduce our impact, and we’re helping clients to achieve their 2030 net zero goals as well.

But we stand with a growing tide of businesses: this is an emergency, and we must be more ambitious in facing it. We commit to further assess our Ecosphere+ strategy to understand where greater emissions reductions can be made within our own business, and how we can better support our clients and other dedicated businesses in achieving net zero as we have. As part of this, we are pleased to introduce this net zero hub for business: a space to share lessons and insights from those on the journey to net zero.

We’ll need extraordinary collaboration to meet the climate and biodiversity emergency, and we hope you’ll find some insight here.

Why the emergency?

There is a huge gap between the emissions path that we are on and where we need to be to keep climate change below dangerous levels.

We are at a critical nexus where catastrophic climate change must, and can, be met by bold action from all spheres of life – governments, businesses and individuals alike. The planet’s rapid ecological breakdown, characterised by the drastic reduction and extinction of species and organisms, can be stopped but we must act now.

By declaring a climate and biodiversity emergency, we expose this crisis as a critical priority requiring urgent action.

Our journey to net zero

1. Measure

To measure our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, we commissioned the development of a carbon calculator. We now share this calculator with other SMEs and individuals alike who are looking for an easy tool to understand and measure their business or personal carbon footprint.

2. Reduce

With a small team and minimal emissions, the majority of our footprint falls to office energy use and business travel. With remote working now a new reality, we support staff to switch to renewable energy contracts for their homes from fellow B Corps. When business travel resumes, we will return to choosing low emissions travel whenever possible and are supportive of exploring innovative digital ways of working.

3. Compensate

To compensate for our remaining unavoidable emissions, we are proud to support natural climate solutions and we offset with our leading forestry conservation and restoration projects across Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Natural Climate Solutions are a critical piece in the fight to mitigate climate change.

Sustainable land management is a game-changer for the climate. Land-use change causes approximately 10% of global emissions each year. Halting deforestation and the degradation of forests could deliver more than a third of the emissions reductions needed through 2030 to keep our climate within 2oC, and save society $6.3-10.6 trillion annually in lost ecosystem services.

Forest conservation is one of the most cost-effective and immediate ways to reduce net emissions, but forests also bring a chain reaction of positive and measurable economic, social and environmental benefits to communities on the ground. Thus, companies using natural climate solutions to mitigate their carbon emissions and achieve net zero are also able to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other positive impact targets.
